Hobbit

More masks made for the exhibition Faces of Middle-earth, sponsored by the Tolkiendili Society of Mexico A.C., on the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Lord of the Rings. The next series of pieces represent hobbits , halflings , key players in the work of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Inspired by the neutral masks of the Commedia dell'Arte, with some alterations in the features to give an appearance of greater innocence. The first mask depicting Sam Gamgee, so their traits are more coarse than the following pieces, his face smiles to show his optimism.

The other masks may well represent any hobbit, although well refined traits could think of Frodo, who had Elvish features. We could even think of Merry and Pippin.
The technique in which masks are made is afgain cartonería, applying acrylic paint with an airbrush. I decided that the skin tone of the hobbits ought to be pink. The hair was done with rope, which served to give a very natural look to their curly hair.
However, working with the rope was very cumbersome, cause it was actually the first time I worked with it and it was based on a wig I saw in a play with friends. What is really annoying is that the rope tends to disintegrate.
